If I Share It, Will They Come? My Content Creator Experiment
Does advice from top creators on growing an audience really work? Let's find out with my content creator experiment!
The creator economy has changed the game.
Now, individuals have the power to attract ideal customers simply by sharing their unique knowledge and skills.
In this new world, you are not just creating content—you are creating customers.
Now, this all sounds great… but is it really possible?
Well, it’s my mission to find out.
Read on to learn the step-by-step actions I’m going to take to try and grow an audience—with the goal of turning my knowledge and skills into a content business.
My Content Creator Experiment
My name is Joel, and I’ve been a professional video editor for over 20 years.
Throughout this time, I’ve deeply explored many different creative outlets—motion graphics design, music production, voice-overs & narration, copywriting/scripting, website design, and more.
I know what quality content should look and sound like.
But lately, I’ve been busy studying a new topic: How to build a content creator business.
That’s where Awesome Content Creator comes in.
I’ve thoroughly studied and analyzed the advice from experts on how achieve success in the creator economy. From people like Chris Do, Jay Clouse, Justin Welsh, Dan Koe, Ali Abdaal, Alex Hormozi, Dickie Bush, Nicolas Cole, and many many more…
Follow me as I put their advice into practice with Awesome Content Creator.

From Passive Observer to Active Participant
I’ve always been more of an observer of the world.
The internet has made that easier than ever.
I would follow people and businesses on social media, but rarely post or interact.
This has lead me to a wealth of great information… helped me study my craft, hone my skills, work through challenges—but it did nothing to create an audience of my own.
This about this:
On any given day, I might suddenly come up with the most amazing idea… a simple solution or product I was sure could help a ton of people—but:
I don’t have an audience to share it with.
So, if the goal is to build a sustainable content business… I must begin to grow an audience.
And action, not observation… is the way.
From Knowledge to Content Business
We, the long time observers, have a lot to offer the world.
We have built our skills in private.
We have studied and refined our process.
We have our own unique approach to problem solving in our field.
But, to transform our knowledge into a business, we must take action and share our discoveries.
And creating content is the most powerful way to leverage our expertise.
The Step-by-Step Process I’m Going to Take (written to myself)
#1 Commit to Regular Sharing and Interaction
Consistency builds trust, and trust is paramount to a business.
Showing up regularly on these discovery platforms will allow more of your ideal audience to find and follow you.
Actions to take:
Commit to consistent posting and interaction on 1 social media platform (don’t overextend yourself by trying to be everywhere).
Commit to writing and delivering a weekly newsletter to provide ongoing value.
Remember: These are commitments to yourself.
Before you become a trusted source to deliver for others, you must hold yourself accountable and show up consistently.
#2 Provide Value in Each Post
Consistency is a great start, but make sure there is value to be found in everything you put out.
Share actionable advice that makes your audience aware of the challenges and the solutions in your area of expertise.
Share insightful tips that help them learn how to get to where you are—but faster.
Share apps, services, and tools you use regularly to make your life easier.
This process will take time, but when you commit to showing up consistently and providing value for the long haul… the real benefits can begin:
You publicly establish yourself as an expert in your field.
Your content acts as a digital business card.
Each piece of content you put out—every social post, every article, every video—becomes a funnel that leads back to you.
And as you start out, don't get caught up in vanity metrics like impressions and subscribers. These numbers are outside of your control and a distraction from what matters. #mindset #stoicism
Instead, simply focus on providing value and being consistent.
#3 Gather and Analyze Feedback
When you’re starting out, you don’t have any real data as to exactly what your audience wants to hear from you.
But as you share, that prized information will start to reveal itself.
Social media platforms are the perfect setting to test out your ideas. You get near-instant feedback from your audience as to whether or not your ideas prove to be valid or valuable.
Gather this feedback—consolidate it, analyze it, and look for patterns.
Also, at this point, if people are finding and getting value from your content, you need to be actively pointing them back to your website (!important).
This is where you have control over what your audience sees—as opposed to having the attention-pulling noise of the internet surrounding each of your posts.
#4 Build Products and Offer Services
With a growing audience plus the actual data about the content they value (and the content they don’t)… you have a huge advantage that you didn’t have before.
You will know their pain points.
You will know their difficulties.
You will know what they’re trying to achieve.
With this, you can begin to build exactly the kinds of products—lessons, courses, apps, etc—that solve the challenges they have.
Additionally, you can offer your own services to address their challenges.
You have publicly displayed your knowledge and abilities, and many people just aren’t interested in spending their time learning how to do certain things. They would rather just pay an expert to get what they need done in a timely and professional way.
That’s where you come in.
Now, your content has officially become a funnel that can lead to a sustainable content business.
TLDR; The (Awesome) Content Creator Experiment
In the beginning, the key is being social on social media. This is how we begin to build our tribe.
The worse-case scenario of this experiment is that I will generate more potential leads for my creative agency business.
Let the content creator business experiment begin!
Awesome Content Creator is my creator brand, and to build it I will:
Commit to posting and interacting consistently.
Share my unique way of approaching the challenges in my field.
Make my audience aware of the problems I’ve solved, and how it has impacted my life.
Provide value in each post.
Gather and analyze feedback, then use that data to build products and services that help solve my audience's problems.
This both raises awareness and builds authority of my creator brand.
This creates an audience.
