Are You Undervaluing Your Creator Expertise?
Identify and overcome imposter syndrome with these actionable steps.
Ever wonder why, despite your past achievements and success, a small doubt still lingers in the back of your mind?
Something that makes you question whether you should even be in a position to speak about or share your perspective on a certain topic.
Imposter syndrome is a general feeling of unworthiness, insecurity, and self-doubt—despite ones skills and accomplishments…
It’s a common experience for many content creators, including successful ones.
Today’s post offers strategies and solutions to help overcome imposter syndrome, including a powerful mindset shift that might change the way you think about being a creator.
Dealing with Imposter Syndrome
Creators who experience imposter syndrome often find themselves questioning:
What makes me so special?
Why should anyone listen to me?
I don’t think I’d call myself an expert…
It’s funny, even as a professional video editor with 2 decades of experience… I started to get this feeling on a regular basis after I started my content creation journey.
So, is there a simple way to overcome and deal with imposter syndrome once and for all?
The good news is, being a common issue, there are many strategies and tactics to answer this question:
Identify it, and recognize that it’s a common feeling
Separate the facts from your feelings
Stop comparing yourself to others
Track and measure your success
Set realistic goals and celebrate small achievements
Engage with your community and seek reassuring feedback
Simply embrace the feeling as a natural part of the creative journey
These are all great strategies to help you tackle imposter syndrome.
However, there’s another approach content creators can use that is truly powerful.
A Different Way to Think About Being a Creator
Successful entrepreneur and author Daniel Priestley has a wonderful concept for how to approach being a creator.
It’s a mindset distinction that he explains in this short YouTube video about becoming a Key Person of Influence—the title of one of his books. Here’s a quote from the video:
“Rather than people thinking about trying to get yourself into the spotlight, I want people to think… how do I become the spotlight? Someone who wants to be in the spotlight is saying it’s all about me—look at me! But someone who’s trying to become the spotlight is saying: Look at this trend. Look at this way of solving a problem. Look at this value that’s out there in the world.”
It’s a simple but powerful idea:
You don’t have to be in the spotlight—you can become a spotlight.
Approaching content creation with this mindset takes the focus and pressure off of you.
Your job isn’t “look at me, look at me!” Instead, it’s finding and providing value—plain and simple.
You don’t have to be a performer. You can be a documentarian.
A guide, not a guru.
To put this into practice, ask yourself:
How can I be effective as a spotlight?
Shine light on content and information you find interesting.
Shine light on useful techniques others are using.
Shine light on systems you find valuable.
Shine light on your unique process.
This newsletter post itself is an example.
I’m shining a light on a concept I believe has value and will benefit you.
Your Turn
What should your audience know right now?
Who should they be following?
What videos should they be watching?
What book or newsletter should they be reading?
What new trends and techniques are you noticing?
