Productize Yourself: How to Turn Your Unique Skills into Profit
Learn to turn your skills into a marketable product... but beware the lure of superficial personal branding advice.
Hello my friend!
We can never directly control what someone thinks about us, our ideas, or our work…
But each and every post we put out is a building block of our public “brand.”
And this is something we do have control over.
These days, on social platforms, content creators frequently discuss the significance of personal branding.
One particular phrase has captivated those looking to turn their expertise into a content business:
“Productize Yourself”
This week, I explore how personal branding gurus with large-followings often share the irresistible benefits that can come from building a one-person business online—offering their success as evidence, and a guide.
This philosophy has led to an army of clones who have created a mountain of noise saying personal branding is the key to success…
But is it that simple?

Where Can You Provide The Most Value?
I believe the reason Dan Koe and Justin Welsh’s messaging is so strong is because what they say is true:
In the digital age, the power and reach of an individual has never been stronger.
They’re also pitching something we all want—freedom, wealth, and time.
And to be clear: I think their content can be a great way to get you to START.
However, their advice can only take you so far.
We have to go deeper.
Escaping the “Creator-Educator” Trap
The fact is you don’t need 100,000 subscribers to:
Make a positive impact
Help people solve problems
Create a sustainable business
As a budding creative entrepreneur, I’m looking to attract people who want to transform their talents, knowledge, and skills into high-quality, valuable content.
This is where I can provide the most value with Awesome Content Creator.
But I’m quite aware of the trap of the personal branding ‘creator’…
You know, the one where: I’m a personal-branding content creator who’s telling ‘aspiring content creators’ that they should build their personal brand by creating content.
Fellow writer-creator Ben Syversen recently shared a refreshing video post by Josh Walker, who sees this noise for what it is—and offers a simple and smart approach to get around it:
"I know I should be building an audience of potential clients (instead of creators). But I don't know where to find them."
Sound familiar?

We have to separate the signal from the noise (which is essentially the name of Josh’s newsletter that I highly recommend: Signal Or Noise).
One way to start is with Josh’s simple approach in the video above:
Heavily curate your social media feed.
Stop following the generic mega-influencers and their creator-clones, who only post platitudes.
Dive deep into your own niche, and look for problems that you can help solve.
Show—don’t tell.
Get more specific, and less general.
A great piece of content isn’t for everyone—it’s for someone.
The same is true for a great product.
It has a specific goal, and ultimately results in a transformation.
